Tables Not Stages
A few months ago, before the summer heat, Stephen and I met for our weekly coffee on the Upper West Side and began discussing the future of Trinity Heights Church. We talked about the importance of church community in an age of isolation and busyness, reflecting on how Jesus’ ministry prioritized a few meaningful relationships.
Our conversation deepened over time and reached a turning point when Stephen shared a quote from John Mark Comer: “The future of the church is smaller, not bigger. It’s around tables, not stages.” We paused, looked at each other, and said, “Let’s do that.”
So, we did.
As a church, we launched nine small Conversation Groups of 5–6 people, alongside monthly Sunday gatherings for worship, communion, and scripture. Our hope is that this blend of intimate groups and corporate worship will help us learn, serve, and grow together.
